Pool Pump Losing Pressure or Not Priming? Troubleshooting Guide by MSP Supply

Understanding pool circulation problems: pump not priming or losing pressure

A pool pump that is struggling to prime or consistently losing pressure is one of the most common issues pool owners encounter. While many customers initially assume the pump has failed, the truth is that most priming and pressure problems come from preventable circulation issues or minor component failures.

Below are the most frequent causes and what they mean for your pool system:

Air leaks in the suction line
If air enters the system before the pump, the pump will lose suction and may never fully prime. Common points of air intrusion include pump lid O-rings, cracked pump lids, loose unions, and suction side plumbing fittings. Even a small air leak can cause major flow issues.

Low water level or poor skimmer flow
When the pool water level drops below the skimmer opening or debris blocks proper flow, the pump begins to draw air. This interrupts circulation and leads to weak pressure, noisy operation, and potential pump damage over time.

Clogged pump basket or skimmer basket
Leaves, hair, and small debris accumulate in baskets and reduce water flow to the pump. This causes the pump to strain, heat up, and lose prime. Regular basket cleaning helps maintain consistent performance and extends equipment life.

Dirty filter or blocked impeller
When filters are overdue for cleaning or backwashing, or when an impeller becomes clogged with debris, the pump cannot maintain proper water movement. Reduced flow increases system pressure and places unnecessary stress on components.

Failing pump seals, gaskets, or worn components
Over time, rubber gaskets, seals, and pump assemblies wear out. A worn pump seal or deteriorated O-ring can allow air in and water out, creating persistent priming problems even when everything else appears normal.
